What do you think when you hear the word abuse? Most of us immediately think about physical abuse, but I’m here to bring awareness to the negative impact of emotional abuse. Many of us do not realize that at times, the way they show us love can be controlling. There are times when people treat us in a way that is mentally damaging, but we believe that they love us; however, the reality is that it is a way to control us and keep us in a volatile relationship. So, let’s look at some red flags and then ask yourself if this may be you. Let’s start with what emotional abuse is. According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, “it includes non-physical behaviors meant to control, isolate, or frighten you, including threats and manipulation”. As a therapist, these are some signs that you may need to reconsider the relationship you are in.
- Does your partner constantly criticize you or make you feel everything you do is wrong?
- Have you noticed your partner keeps you from being around family and friends?
- Do you feel you are told what to wear or even what to say or how to speak?
- Do you feel that your feelings don’t matter, or do you start to think you are going “crazy”?
Recognizing emotional abuse can sometimes be difficult because your partner is subtle in nature, but it’s never too late to get help and support. Listen to your “gut feelings” and know that you are important. Let’s work on loving yourself first. You are never alone in taking your life back.
