You can recognize Leopoldo Sánchez from anywhere: the sunglasses, the confident way he walks, and that big smile that has become part of his identity. I have known him for many years, and one thing that has never changed is his energy and his constant presence in everything he builds.
What sets him apart as a business owner is his ability to separate leadership from labor. He is the kind of man you can see stepping out of a Mercedes in an elegant suit, and at the same time picking up trash in his parking lot, lifting boxes, or working side by side with his employees inside his supermarkets. His success has never taken him away from work; instead, it has strengthened his commitment to it.
After arriving in the United States in 1992 from Santiago de Los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, Leopoldo started from the ground up, working in family businesses and opening his first grocery store in the Bronx. Over time, he grew and built supermarkets that now serve communities in Reading, Scranton, and Lancaster. His most recent and largest location at 235 North 4th Street in Reading, Super Natural & Fresh Produce III, has already become a major success since opening, remaining consistently full of customers.
Leopoldo has not only built businesses—he has built community. He is known for his close connection with people, his generosity, and the family-like atmosphere inside his stores. A slogan created by local radio host DJ Chamo King helped make him especially known for his popular egg specials, which the community still talks about today, such as 90 eggs for $5.00.
Leopoldo, “the man of the low-priced eggs,” even in his sixties, maintains an active lifestyle, also driven by his participation in a baseball league for men over forty, where he has earned multiple recognitions. In addition, softball has become an important part of his life, helping him relieve stress, stay in shape, and continue developing the discipline and vitality that define him every day.
I would describe Leopoldo Sánchez as “extremely brave.” He is also visionary, determined, ambitious, and resilient. Not everyone is willing to take the risks of building multimillion-dollar projects after starting from humble beginnings. It takes great courage, discipline, and self-belief to grow the way he has.
His story proves that success does not happen overnight—it is built step by step, with consistency, vision, and hard work, while never losing the connection to the community that has been part of that growth.
This is still a true family business, where his daughters, sons, close friends like Delmin, and his wife have played an important role in its development and continue to actively support all operations and expansion.
As a Latina entrepreneur in the diaspora, people like Leopoldo open doors for all of us. His story inspires, represents, and empowers an entire community.
