This article is written in honor of Walter “Walt” Kazmierczak, Jr., affectionately known to many of us as Mr. Polka Party. His recent passing reminds me just how important it is to honor people while they are still with us. Walt did so much for his community, and he made a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Walter was my husband’s co-worker, and we always looked forward to seeing him at every iHeart Media Christmas party. He was kind, warm, and always full of stories. When I think of him, I immediately think of the music and joy he brought to others.
Walt, who passed away this summer at the age of 90, was many things: a U.S. Navy veteran, a dedicated steelworker at Carpenter Technologies for 35 years, and above all, a man deeply devoted to his family, faith, and community.
He was actively involved with the Slovak Catholic Sokol for over six decades, where he earned the Frank Petruff Award for his lifetime of service. He also gave his time generously to causes like the United Way of Berks County and supported young musicians through his 20+ years of volunteering with the Reading High School Band-Aids.
But the reason I call him Mr. Polka Party is because Walt was the beloved voice behind Walt K’s Polka Party on WRAW Radio. For decades, he brought polka music and joy into countless homes every Sunday morning. His final broadcast—hosted by his granddaughter Ellen—was a heartfelt tribute to his incredible legacy. Even from assisted living, Walt tuned in and called the show, still participating in what he loved most.
Another beautiful soul is his wife of 66 years, Erma, who is a kind and gracious person in her own right. Walt was a devoted family man, and he leaves behind not only his beloved wife, but also his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many others in the community who were blessed to know him.
Walt gave his time, energy, and heart to everything he did. He will be remembered not only for his music and service, but for the joy, tradition, and connection he shared with others, especially through his love of polka.
I’m sure there are now Polka parties in heaven. Rest in Peace, Walt.
