As a culture, we are starting to embrace our natural hair. From my experience as a curly hair expert, there is a shift happening in the Hispanic community that now more Latino women, men, and children are embracing their natural tresses.
This is huge for us because historically, we are not taught to embrace our hair and we end up forcibly altering our natural hair texture. The new generations are curious about their roots and are putting in the time and work to learn about their natural hair. Even more exciting, the new generations are influencing the older generations of Latinos, and this is sparking their curiosity to also want to learn about their natural hair.
At the salon, we are more often working with Latinos that are seeking education to learn about their natural hair. There has been a high level of curiosity and need for information that is being asked for. We are proud to be able to help our community learn about their hair and provide the support needed when starting their natural hair journey.
Why might the shift in our standards of beauty be happening? As we progress as a society, we are learning that all hair is good hair. The difference is that natural hair needs to be cared for differently. But that does not make our hair undesirable. I am excited about the future, and I look forward to a world where wearing out natural hair is the norm and not the expedition.
