There is a significant impact that is had when men spend time together in an environment that is both a healthy form of competition as well as an exercise in male bonding. As men mature, these needs develop because of either their past competitive nature or their just general need for fellowship.
Being involved in things like adult basketball leagues helps keep men in great shape and gives them an outlet for energy. It also allows them time for themselves that doesn’t involve being a dad, husband, or employee. All of this while keeping the blood flowing and the joints lubricated. In the past, Reading had some great outlets including early Black Top, the Pike basketball league, and the Football league. Due to its popularity, the football league was adopted by Body Zone, and other indoor venues so men could play all year long. Men playing in these leagues have been known to stay healthier longer but also build long-lasting friendships through the shared experiences and the natural team building that takes place. Although sports like football get increasingly strenuous on the body as men age, there are healthy alternatives.
Golf is a perfect example of a sport that you can’t continue as men mature physically. Many men have taken up the sport once they realized the entertainment factor, but more so the quality time spent with other like-minded men. We have all heard about how many deals get done on the golf course and that is a testament to the trust factor built up through men spending time together.
Women do a much better job of scheduling time for physical self-care such as yoga, massages and even just walking with friends. As men see the benefits of staying physically active, these sports leagues and golf outings help reinforce the importance of physical activity and give them a designated time to commit to versus trying to “fit it in.” All men are encouraged to participate in some form of structured sport or physical activity because the benefits physically, emotionally, and mentally are immeasurable.
