Sometimes I feel invisible.
Sometimes I don't feel heard.
Sometimes the doctor dismisses me when I start explaining my symptoms.
Sometimes I don't know what to say or what questions to ask.
Does this sound familiar?
Many women enter healthcare spaces carrying experiences of feeling dismissed, judged, or misunderstood. These experiences can make pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care feel even more difficult to navigate. This is where a doula can provide meaningful support.
A doula can help you understand your rights, explore your options, and prepare questions for your healthcare team. They can encourage you to slow down, ask for clarification, and use your voice when you may feel overwhelmed or unheard. A doula does not speak for you, but they help you feel more confident speaking for yourself.
Whether this is your first baby or your third, a doula can help you prepare for birth, identify resources, and reflect on previous experiences. After birth, when you’re exhausted and receiving a flood of information, a doula can help you process what you’ve heard and identify questions you may want to ask your care team.
Most importantly, a doula can remind you that your feelings and concerns matter. That gut feeling that something isn’t right may be a reason to ask another question or request more information.
You deserve to feel heard, seen, respected, and supported. A doula can help you find your voice and feel confident using it.
A Few Ways to Advocate for Yourself:
Ask for clarification: “Can you explain that in a way I can better understand?”
Ask about your options: “What are my choices, and what are the benefits and risks of each?”
Trust your questions: You don’t have to know exactly what’s wrong to ask for more information.
Bring support: Consider having a doula or trusted support person with you during appointments, birth, or postpartum care.
Ask for a pause: “I’d like a moment to think about this before deciding.”
