Emotional Check-Ins for Busy Women & Mothers
As a mother of three under six years old, it seems like the to-do list never ends. Between caring for my family, extracurricular activities, being an entrepreneur, going to the gym, socialization, and the list goes on, it can feel like finding a quiet minute for myself is nearly impossible. Most women move through their days on the go and learn to be strong and selfless. Emotional check-ins can offer women and mothers a way to reconnect with themselves while in the trenches of constant responsibility. When we learn to slow down long enough to notice what we feel, we prevent burnout, respond more intentionally, and model emotional awareness for our children. The following are ways to begin incorporating emotional check-ins into your routine:
- Create a small moment of stillness. A check-in doesn’t require an hour of silence. It can happen in the car before entering the house or while waiting for your coffee. Just close your eyes, take three deep breaths, and ask yourself, What am I feeling right now?
- Name your emotions without judgment. Emotions lose intensity when they are acknowledged. Whether the feeling is frustration, sadness, gratitude, or overwhelm, gently label it. Avoid trying to fix it immediately. Awareness alone creates space for clarity.
- What’s the need beneath the feeling? Every emotion carries information. For example, stress might signal a need for support, while irritability may be a signal for exhaustion. When we approach our emotions with curiosity, it can help us understand what our emotions are trying to tell us.
A pause may feel simple, but it can be transformative. Women deserve moments to care for themselves, too!
