For Shawnick Rodriguez, art is more than something you look at, it is a way to connect with where you come from. Known as Art by SIR, Shawnick is a Puerto Rican artist and educator whose colorful paintings, murals, wearable art, and one-of-a-kind creations celebrate Puerto Rican culture, identity, and heritage. Originally from Camden, New Jersey, her work has become a vibrant part of the Philadelphia-area Latino community.
As an educator, Shawnick also uses art to help young people explore creativity, culture, and their own stories. Her work is a beautiful reminder that culture can be painted, worn, shared, and passed on to the next generation.
A Special Moment
Shawnick recently presented Omi Hopper of Cooking con Omi with a beautiful hand-painted portrait during Omi’s book-signing and cultural event at Taller Puertorriqueño in Philadelphia. I was proud to witness this special moment of one artist honoring another.
