The Story Behind Mofongo Restaurant in Reading, PA
Success is rarely a straight path, and for brothers Ramon Martinez and Jose Aliro Martinez, the journey to restaurant ownership has been filled with hard work, setbacks, determination, and a passion for serving their community.
Born and raised in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the brothers dreamed of building a better future in the United States. In 2001, Ramon began that journey when he moved to New York, where he worked various jobs and met his future wife, Mariluz Alfayo. In 2006, the couple relocated to Reading, Pennsylvania, where they continued building their lives together. Ramon’s brother Aliro arrived in 2010.
Over the years, Ramon and Mariluz gained valuable experience working in several local restaurants, including Cristina Restaurant, La Casa del Chimi, and 4th & Penn Restaurant. Their dedication to the restaurant industry eventually inspired them to take a leap of faith into entrepreneurship. In 2013, after working as employees at 4th & Penn Restaurant, they purchased the business. While their first experience as restaurant owners did not turn out as planned, they refused to let the setback define them. After operating the restaurant for approximately two years, they sold the business and returned to the workforce.
Rather than viewing the experience as a failure, they saw it as an opportunity to learn, grow, and prepare for the future. Five years later, armed with even more experience and confidence, Mariluz decided it was time to try again. Having worked closely with the Hispanic community for many years, she recognized the demand for authentic Dominican and Puerto Rican cuisine. One dish, in particular, was constantly requested by customers: mofongo. To honor the rich culinary traditions shared by Dominicans and Puerto Ricans, the family chose the name “Mofongo” for their new restaurant. Shortly after the pandemic, in 2021, Mofongo Restaurant opened its doors in Reading with three partners.
Today, Mofongo Restaurant is celebrating five successful years in business. The restaurant has become a favorite destination for customers seeking authentic flavors from the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Known for its delicious mofongo, churrasco (skirt steak) topped with chimichurri sauce, shrimp dishes, and refreshing handcrafted beverages such as piña coladas, mojitos, and margaritas, Mofongo has earned a loyal following throughout the region. The restaurant also offers catering services for special events and gatherings.
While Mariluz recently sold her partnership in Mofongo Restaurant, her entrepreneurial journey continues. Just three months ago, she opened Guacamole Mexican Restaurant in Shillington alongside her husband, Ramon, and daughter, Alondra Garman. Mariluz, who was born in Veracruz, Mexico, and her daughter Alondra proudly embrace their Mexican heritage and are excited to bring authentic Mexican flavors to Berks County.
Today, Mofongo Restaurant is owned and operated by the two brothers, Ramon Martinez and Jose Aliro Martinez, but they would like to acknowledge their other two brothers, Martin and Rufino, for their support.
Their story proves that perseverance, commitment, and family can help turn a dream into a thriving reality. It’s also a powerful reminder that success is not about never failing, it’s about never giving up. Through determination, resilience, and a willingness to learn from every challenge, they have built businesses that celebrate culture, family, and community.
