My name is Joylainny Osoria Reyes, and I am a graduate of the Health Nursing Professions program at Reading Muhlenberg Career & Technology Center (RMCTC). I was born in the Dominican Republic and later moved to New York and then to Pennsylvania. My passion for healthcare began at a young age due to my own medical condition and the many hours I spent in hospitals.
Because of my condition, I became very familiar with hospitals. I remember the beeping machines, the long waits, and the fear that often came with medical appointments. What I remember most, however, was a woman at the front desk who used a wheelchair, just like me. She greeted me with kindness, explained what would happen next, and made me feel comfortable. She became my inspiration, and I told myself, “I want to be that person for someone else someday.”
When I enrolled at RMCTC, I chose the healthcare program because I knew it was more than just a career path—it was personal. Throughout the program, I learned medical terminology, ethics and moral principles, and patient privacy practices. Most importantly, I learned how much every detail matters in patient care.
During my senior year, I participated in a work-based learning placement with Easterseals. I translated information for families, checked patients in for appointments, and helped keep records organized. I enjoyed helping worried parents by answering their questions and connecting them with the support they needed. Every day, I found myself becoming the person I once needed when I was younger. Although the work was sometimes challenging, it was incredibly meaningful because I was not just learning a profession—I was fulfilling my purpose.
RMCTC did more than teach me about healthcare; it gave me confidence and helped me recognize my strengths. It taught me that my condition does not limit me—it gives me a unique perspective and allows me to better understand and support others. RMCTC empowered me to use my voice, advocate for myself, and make a positive difference in the lives of the people I serve.
