June is the perfect month to celebrate fathers in recovery. With Father’s Day occurring in June, this month provides a powerful time for dads in recovery to reconnect with their families and to build trust. Holidays can oftentimes bring up mixed emotions and painful memories of the chaos of family life before recovery. Therefore, it is critical to acknowledge the existence of these feelings but to prioritize the present. Families must honor that it takes time to heal and the healing process involves the engagement of all family members.
Celebrations such as Father’s Day present opportunities to build new traditions, such as outdoor activities and hobby sharing. Planning activities that create new memories can be an important first step. Preparation for Father’s Day can be a meaningful time for healthy family discussion of possible new activities that will create a stress-free day.
However, beyond a day full of activities, Father’s Day is also a time to establish a new family value – that it is okay to feel and to express those feelings through hugs. Be ready to accept that each family member may be in a different place in the recovery process. Do not underestimate the power of a simple hug. However, not everyone is ready for hugs. Taking small steps may be necessary as family members learn to rebuild trust. If family members are not ready to express their feelings through hugs or words, a simple card may be a significant way of expressing love. And remember not to take this journey alone-reach out to support systems as you begin to explore new traditions and relationships.
