Breaking stigma and building access in the Latino community. I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, “Therapy is for crazy people.” Unfortunately, this belief still exists in the Latino community. However, things are starting to change, and more people are seeking help from professionals.
I came here today to encourage you to consider therapy as a safe space to talk through difficult situations that you may not feel comfortable sharing with your loved ones. Therapists are held to high ethical standards, and confidentiality is a top priority. They will not judge you and will keep what you share private.
Therapy is a space where you can express your deepest feelings and learn healthy coping skills to manage your emotions. Some people may say, “There is no one out there perfect for me,” but that is not true. Many therapists specialize in different areas, including spirituality, and you can even find bilingual professionals. Yes, therapy can be done in your primary language.
You also have options—you can attend therapy in person or virtually. If you don’t know where to start, you can reach out to your doctor, community members, or even your insurance company for guidance. You can also ask someone you trust for a referral. Many people have found therapy to be empowering and life-changing.
So go ahead and take that step; you will feel better. Take it from a therapist who also attends therapy and finds it very helpful. Let’s break the stigma. It starts with you.
