The New Year offers new beginnings for individuals and families who have begun the journey of recovery from a substance use disorder. While this journey may hold many unknowns, these practical recovery resolutions provide hope and support.
- The Past: Do not dwell on the past. What is done is done, and you cannot change it. Letting go of the shame too often associated with addiction can free up your energy to focus on the positives that lie ahead.
- The Present: Living in the “Now” by staying focused on the positive changes each day brings. Commit to recovery resolutions by simplifying your life and strengthening important relationships. Staying active, eating healthier, and taking time to meditate are all small, important steps. Celebrate how these accomplishments bring a greater sense of serenity to your home. Make sure you take time to provide affirmations to yourself and your loved ones, recognizing the accomplishments that the New Year brings.
- The Future: Accept that the future is not something you can control, especially in these days and times of uncertainty. However, by giving back in the present, we can set the stage for a meaningful future. And we can influence the future of our children by being open with them about our journey of recovery, guiding them in making healthier choices.
Remember that healing and recovery take time, but our actions today nurture our growth.
