An understanding of the unique needs of Latinos and Hispanics is essential as families begin the journey of recovery. Very strong family bonds and connections to religion serve as a strong foundation for recovery. However, recovery is not simple, and family members must be prepared to be part of the recovery process.
According to Robert Diaz, executive director of “Walk It Out Recovery Services,” education and empathy are keys to the successful recovery of individuals and families. As a person in long-term recovery himself, Mr. Diaz has experienced many family members succumbing to the health complications of substance use disorders. Family members are oftentimes confused, isolated, and misinformed and may even turn to self-medication in response to the depression and anxiety created by a relationship with an individual with a substance use disorder.
Education begins with an understanding of substance use disorders, the many pathways to recovery, and the obstacles that may impact sobriety. For example, many individuals do not understand that drugs such as marijuana, nicotine, and alcohol may be triggers for addiction. All family members in recovery benefit from education that builds on life experiences and guides family members to ongoing community support.
Mr. Diaz believes that with support, family members can navigate through the chaos of addiction. As a certified recovery family specialist, he offers these words of encouragement to all family members: “Recovery is possible. We are here to help you move from hurt to healing. Never forget there is hope for the hopeless.”
