PM: WHO ARE YOU?
AC: I am Amalitsa Carpio, a passionate entrepreneur, mental health advocate, and skilled pastry chef with over 10 years of experience in the baking industry. At 34, I have built a thriving small business, Sugar and Sweets by Ami, while also overcoming my own mental health struggles through the therapeutic power of baking.
PM: TELL US ABOUT YOUR EDUCATION AND CAREER.
AC: A proud graduate of Reading High School and the Reading Muhlenberg Career and Technology Center, class of 2009, I found my calling in creating treats that bring joy to others. Baking became my therapy, helping me rebuild both my confidence and my life. Today, as a business owner, I am honored to share my craft with the world while providing a safe space for those navigating mental health journeys.
PM: TELL US ABOUT THE ART OF TEACHING OTHERS:
AC: I have recently been given the incredible opportunity to teach at the same Career and Technology Center where I once learned, empowering the next generation of bakers to explore their creativity and emotional healing in the kitchen. Through my business, advocacy, and teaching, I continue to make a difference by blending my love for baking with my mission: Never be afraid to take the WHISK. My work is about improving mental health and inspiring others to live their most authentic lives.
PM: WHO HAS INSPIRED THE WOMAN YOU ARE TODAY?
AC: This would be my mom, Carmen Painter. She believed in me when I couldn’t believe in myself. She encouraged me to pursue my dreams—no matter how big or small—and taught me to stay true to myself through every challenge. She taught me that it’s not the struggle that defines us but how we rise from it. Her strength and grace shaped the woman I am today.
PM: ANY OTHER MENTORS?
AC: Yes, to my cherished pastry chef and mentor, Ms. Stettler: I will forever be grateful for your guidance, knowledge, and inspiration. I also want to honor and remember my teacher, Chef Klein, whom we recently lost to cancer. I will continue to make you both proud, as your influence on my life and career will never fade.
