Ms. Carrie Thomas M.S., M.Ed. has been a Reading Specialist at Reading High School since 2022. She has graduate degrees in Literacy and Curriculum & Instruction and over two decades of experience teaching literacy and music to students from birth through adulthood. She has been a proud public-school teacher since 2006. Additionally, she has experience with community education and outreach including managing a program that provided free books and cultural experiences to children and families in some of the most under-resourced neighborhoods in Philadelphia. She was also part of a team who set up bookshelves in barbershops and laundromats to encourage young children to read.
Carrie strives to create a sense of community and belonging in her classes and approaches her work through a trauma-informed lens. She is a past chair of the Keystone State Literacy Association’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Committee and a founding member of the Diversity and Equity Committee at Fairwold Academy in Fort Washington. She is dedicated to fostering mutual trust and respect with her students through authentic connections. One student writes about Carrie’s reading class, “Every time I come in here, I feel welcomed, and you make me feel good about myself.”
When Carrie is not in “The Castle,” you can find her camping, enjoying fiber arts, practicing mindfulness, or reading.
