Tremayne Jones is a lifelong Reading resident who prides himself on impacting his community. “Change begins with your immediate environment.” Tremayne is the product of a headstrong mother whom he watched go from being on food stamps to getting an education and ultimately being an associate principal at Reading High School before her passing in 2015.
Tremayne is a 1996 graduate of Reading High School, a 2000 Graduate of Lincoln University, and a 2003 graduate of the Lincoln University Master of Human Services program.
Tremayne worked in the mental health field for 25 years in various capacities, mainly working, counseling, and mentoring children, teens, and adults.
In 2009, Tremayne founded the non-profit Reading KTB because he could not find a basketball program for his two boys. Reading KTB has since grown from 1 team to multiple teams competing in competitive travel league circuits and a youth basketball program in the city with over 400 elementary/middle school-age players.
After being frustrated about the service delivery of mental health services, Tremayne decided to take a leap to create his own. Angered by his supervisor’s assertion that he should “have more clients,” Tremayne quit on the spot and ventured out on his own to start Betterview Counseling.
Armed with a MacBook and a Ring Light, Tremayne began seeing a few clients via telehealth and eventually saved up enough money to get a small two-office space on Park Rd.
After quickly expanding and hiring his first 2 employees, Tremayne then negotiated with the landlord to rent a space across the parking lot that was bigger and more suitable with 5 offices…, or so he thought. After running out of space at the new 5 space office, Tremayne eventually asked the landlord to connect an adjacent unit to add 5 more offices. Once again, this was not enough. Eventually, the landlord of the building moved out of her office and converted it to 3 more offices for Betterview to use.
Another great opportunity arose when Haven Behavioral Hospital wanted to sell a building they were no longer using and contacted Tremayne through a former employee. The building was fitted out for a mental health clinic and fit perfectly with Tremayne’s vision of expansion. The only prohibitive factor was the cost.
This building was 7,000 square feet with 17 offices and plenty of parking on a major road in Wyomissing. Determined to purchase the property, Tremayne verbally agreed to buy the building, taking a huge risk without a promise of financing. Eventually, financing was secured, and the building was purchased, further expanding the Betterview organization and its community impact.
Betterview was formed to provide a fresh take on mental health service delivery rooted in community involvement and diverse staff. Plans include opening a mental health clinic for Medicaid clients and providing medication management.
I Rosa J. Parra, owner of Palo Magazine, am beyond proud of Tremayne—a remarkable young Black man who grew up in the City of Reading, graduated from Reading Senior High, and is now making waves by purchasing a building in the prominent area of Wyomissing and employing 29 people. It is an exciting and inspiring journey that reflects his dedication, resilience, and the power of community. When your achievements echo through time, it is as if your ancestors are dancing in celebration, proud of the legacy you continue to build. Every step forward honors their sacrifices, and every milestone reached is a tribute to the strength and perseverance that runs through your veins. The joy they feel is reflected in your triumphs—together, you have created something truly remarkable. Tremayne continues to stay committed to bringing mental health awareness to the community that raised him.
We dedicate this story and journey to Tremayne’s mom. May she Rest in Peace.
