When I think about Racial Disparities in Workplace Safety for Blacks/Latinos makes me wonder about the number of minorities that work in high risk, physical demanding jobs and the lack of representation in higher paid/less physical demanding positions throughout Pennsylvania. While there is no specific data that we can easily obtain, and these numbers may vary by demographics, we will focus on what companies can do to close these disparities and increase safety in the workplace.
Here are some ways that companies with high Latino and Blacks representation in the workforce can do to make the workplace safer and inclusive:
- Refrain from preference treatment: Ensure that all safety rules, policies and training are provided in the language that associates understand. Having multi-lingual options.
- Confirm the material is understood providing a classroom portion, a hands-on portion and a written test in their preferred language.
- Ensure minorities representation: Hire qualified supervisors, managers and leaders with similar background to front line employees.
- Preferably that also speak their language.
- Eliminate the possibilities of a hostile environment: Create and follow through policies that promote No Discrimination, Dignity and Respectful treatment for all employees.
- Be consistent: Reinforce safety rules and corrective actions equally to all employees.
- Provide opportunities: Make advanced education and/or career development opportunities available to all employees.
These actions could minimize the possibility of injuries and racial disparities in the workplace. Educated and happy employees are efficient and safe.
