The holiday season is upon us bringing with it both excitement and anxiety. As we prepare for holiday festivities and family gatherings, we must be mindful that the holidays can be especially difficult for both people in recovery from substance use disorders and their family members. And the winter doldrums following the holidays can be equally stressful. However, if we plan, the holidays can be an important time to celebrate the gift of recovery and to share this gift with friends and family.
For people in recovery, the tools for sober living become essential gifts. Always remember the philosophy of taking life one day at a time. Make sure your recovery support system is in place and use this support system when challenged by holiday stressors. Self-acceptance is an important tool- you can give yourself permission to skip holiday gatherings where drinking or other drug use is likely. In the event, you must go to an event where there will be drinking, take someone from your recovery support system. Many 12-step activities are planned during the holidays including marathon (24/7) meetings as well as gatherings/parties to provide recovery-specific support and connection.
For families affected by a loved one’s substance use disorder, there are unforeseen challenges that plague holiday plans. If your loved one is not yet sober, expect that his/her behavior may be unpredictable. Therefore, when planning for festivities, focus on health and safety, setting boundaries rather than outright excluding a family member struggling with sobriety. More importantly, if your loved one is navigating a path to recovery, your support and caring are the greatest gifts you can give.
Remember self-care is a key to a joyful season. Take time for a relaxing activity- whether it be a long walk, listening to your favorable music, or streaming a movie- you can give yourself a holiday gift. And you are not alone.
