Whether you are thinking of becoming pregnant, already are pregnant or just gave birth – it is important to get the care and support you need. For a mother/birthing parent, establishing a positive pregnancy and postpartum experience begins with taking care of yourself. The following are a few tips to consider while taking care of your health during the perinatal stages:
- Movement- Research shows that exercise releases endorphins, which can enhance your mood and reduce stress. Whether it is a walk or yoga, self-care through movement is essential during the perinatal period. Healing times and restrictions may vary based on your health during pregnancy and the method of delivery. Just remember to consult with your healthcare provider and go at your own pace.
- Perinatal Mental Health Disorders (PMHD)- One common PMHD is postpartum depression, but there are many conditions that can affect the perinatal population which include, postpartum anxiety, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and psychosis.Research shows that 15-20% of birthing people or moms experience a PMHD. These disorders can affect people at any time during their lives. However, there is a marked increase in prevalence of these disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Several risk factors can increase the likelihood of developing one of these disorders, such as but not limited to pregnancy loss, birth trauma, a personal or family history of mental health, and lack of support. There are a variety of treatment options, such as mental health counseling, medical evaluation and treatment, social support, and practical help. Some people recover using one treatment option and others may benefit from 2 or 3 or more, but only you will know which ones are right for you.
- Community Resources- Obtaining resources in your community for pregnant and postpartum parents can be beneficial and build a supportive community. This provides the opportunity to connect with fellow moms in prenatal/postnatal classes, support groups, common friends, mommy programs, online discussion groups, and houses of worship.
