Summer has just arrived; Gardening can be a wonderful activity for both physical and mental health. As fun as it can be, gardening can also put unnecessary strain on your body.
Here are a few tips on how to take care of your back before and while gardening:
- Warm Up Before Gardening: Get your blood flowing and loosen up your muscles. Take a short walk and do some gentle stretching exercises for a few minutes before starting.
- Lift with Your Legs, Not Your Back: Bend your knees and use your leg muscles to lift heavy bags of soil, rather than bending at the waist. Keep the object close to your body and avoid twisting while lifting.
- Take Breaks: Be sure to listen to your body and don’t overexert yourself. Take regular breaks to rest and stretch.
- Maintain Good Posture: Keep your back straight and avoid hunching over for extended periods. Use a kneeling pad or gardening stool to reduce strain on your back when working close to the ground.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water while gardening to stay hydrated, especially on hot days. Dehydration can lead to muscle cramps and fatigue, which can increase your risk of injury.
Finally, give your back some recovery by visiting your Chiropractor. He can offer preventative care and recovery treatment. A Chiropractor can also help identify and address any underlying issues that may be worsened by gardening.
Above all “listen to your body”.
