Warmer weather means more active outdoor play and an increased need for heightened situational awareness to keep our children safe. Here are a few tips to assist you in providing your little ones with a safe, excellent, and fun-filled summer:
- Use sunscreen when playing outdoors & remember to reapply it often- especially if sweating or playing in water which will wash it off.
- Check your child for ticks if hiking or exploring nature, even in your backyard.
- Dress your child in bright colors when visiting crowded places such as amusement parks, zoos, etc. to be able to spot them easily if you become separated.
- If your child is not able to recite your name and phone number in the event of emergencies (i.e… separation from the family in a public place), ensure that your cell number is located on your child.
- Teach children what to do in the event of an emergency- who they should report to in the event they become separated from you- such as security, store employees, etc…
- Teach your children how to be safe around water, including pools, and around campfires and firepits- and never leave them unattended around these areas.
- Remember to use car seats, bike helmets, and pool accessories in accordance with their labels.
Active outdoor play, social interactions with others, and a significant reduction in screen time promote healthy physical, mental, emotional, and social development which are all essential for their future success.
Most importantly, remember to cherish these days because today is the youngest they will ever be again.
