Let’s debunk some of the most common textured hair myths that we often discuss at the salon.
Myth #1: You Should Not Cleanse Textured Hair with Shampoo, Only With Conditioner.
Truth: This is extremely inaccurate. Would you wash your hands with lotion? Why wash your hair with conditioner? Yes, our hair needs hydration but it also needs to be cleansed. Many of us use oils and butters and those need to be washed away to allow our scalp to breathe. You can use a sulfate-free shampoo weekly and clarify once per month. Co-washing is okay, but a good deep cleanse is also very important for healthy hair and scalp.
Myth #2: Curly Hair Can Only Be Cut Dry
Truth: There are many cutting techniques used to cut curly hair. At the salon we offer options to cut the hair wet or dry, it all depends on the person’s preference. Both wet and dry cuts offer beautiful shapes.
Myth #3: Textured Hair Does Not Need to Be Dried
Truth: The reality is that our hair needs to be dried to avoid an imbalance in our porosity. Leaving water sitting in our hair for extended periods can lead to high porosity, frizz, dryness, and breakage. To avoid water damage, diffuse your hair or sit under a hooded dryer.
There are many other textured hair myths, but as we progress with the natural hair movement we will continue to learn more and acquire more knowledge about our hair. Keeping an open mind and being flexible is the best strategy to achieve your best hair.
