Hi, my name is Jael Zacaula Gaspar. I am a 17-year-old senior who currently attends both Reading High School and Reading Muhlenberg Career & Technology Center. I chose the Plumbing & Heating program as my career pathway because I knew I wanted to do hands-on work in the future. This career path offers great opportunities to gain experience that will benefit me in the long run. There have been a lot of things that I have learned in my program such as learning how to solder for the first time, installing kitchen sinks, and installing toilets. I even enjoy working with different copper, plastic, and black iron pipes.
My Plumbing and Heating instructor, Mr. Nemes, is great at teaching us step-by-step instructions and proper field-related vocabulary. He has taught me technical skills and a great work ethic to help me obtain a co-op position at East Penn Manufacturing. As of right now, I am a Maintenance Mechanic intern at East Penn where every day I learn something new. What’s really great about my position is that not only do I do plumbing-related jobs, but I also learn how to do new things like watching basic welding, using a plasma cutter, and just being able to learn how to operate the machinery inside the maintenance shop.
Our supervisor at East Penn, Mr. Brian Mengel, does an amazing job making sure we all work safely. He makes sure I am always learning and growing at the different jobs we perform each day. As for my future, I am definitely considering staying here at East Penn to keep growing my skills as a Maintenance Mechanic. I like the feeling of being able to help the company so they can keep making batteries in order to keep America “charged”! East Penn offers the opportunity to further my education upon graduation through coursework with RACC. Reading Muhlenberg CTC and East Penn has definitely given me the opportunities to lead me to a bright future!
