Professionally and personally, I love learning but not so much being graded, Lol! This made school, sports, and of course the professional annual review process as an employee a hard pill to swallow at times. Therefore, I developed a way for a person to grade themselves and also receive a grade from another… and “The Gap” between the grades to be the focus, rather than one person’s opinion being “Right”; allowing enhanced Leadership & Work/Life Harmony for both parties; boss and employee, coach and player, parent and child! So how to do it?
Here’s a quick example, my youngest son plays quarterback… after every game and practice with his QB Coach, I ask him, “What grade do you give yourself and why?” and he answers. I then ask his coach with my son standing right there, “What grade do you give his performance today?”. When the grades match… GREAT! When he says an A and the coach says a C, or the other way around; the grade doesn’t matter as much as “The GAP”. Let’s continuously focus on improving The GAP after every practice and game and BOOM… better happens and greatness can begin!
What an impact and powerful… not always easy, but powerful conversation professionally and personally with your people! Remember, it’s best to preface what the process is, start with “Their Grade” first, share “The Why”, and consistently fill the gap!
