In times where rental properties are scarce and there is so much competition, knowing how to prepare to meet those who manage the property and convince them that you are the best option is not something you should overlook. I will explain some mistakes that applicants make, and I will give you alternatives of what you should do to have the keys to your new home.
First mistake, your appearance. When people show up at a viewing in dirty clothes, or as if they just got out of bed, it gives the impression that they are careless, and if they are careless with their own appearance, they probably will be with the property as well. You have to think of this as if you were applying for a job that you want to stay in for a long time. You must present yourself impeccably and you must behave as such.
Second mistake, talking about problems. Everyone that is looking for a new home has a reason, but you don’t have to go into details. This is a business transaction, not the beginning of a friendship. You must not speak badly about where you live, you must not mention financial problems, or anything that makes you look unstable. Most people think that they are making the decision to rent, but the reality is that they are being interviewed to find out what problems they will bring to the new home. Talk about your achievements and goals.
Third mistake, not being prepared and putting pressure. Research the requirements before going to see the property. Bring copies of proof of income that you can leave with your application. Bring a list of your questions and listen carefully to what is expected of you. Do not think that by telling the property manager that you have the money you will convince them. Most of them are not concerned about money, they care more about their peace of mind. Follow these tips and take the time to reflect on how you failed in the past, and I assure you that in less than you imagine you will have the keys to your new home.
