His name is Alexis Perez owner of All Stars Hair and owner of All Seasons Barbershop. He started cutting his own hair when he was 22yrs old with the help of Maurice Dunn. It was an act of desperation as he had made some bad decisions that had him incarcerated.
Initially, he was just trying to escape his reality and occupy his time. However, as he started learning he noticed how much attention he was giving the skill. He still remembers, when the first inmate asked who had cut his hair. When Alexis replied, “me” he was surprised at the inmate’s response of “could you cut my hair?” This made him feel good and was the beginning of Alexis wanting to home his skill and it also made him learn more about cutting hair.
Now let’s fast forward to 2009 already out of prison he enrolled in Barber School. In 2011 he started his professional career cutting at ATS Barbershop with the help of Serge Vilaire. You can also read Serge’s story in this edition of Palo. He quickly started learning more about the business side of barbering. He feels that due to the fact that his skill set wasn’t compatible with the skills of the other barbers that he was collaborating with he began pushing himself even harder. He provided haircuts to the community, and he gained his own following through community efforts such as free haircuts and toy drives.
At the tip of his individual success another scary reality hit, he was diagnosed with cancer. To complicate matters, even more, he was incarcerated again due to a fictitious parole violation. No one ever wants to hear the words’ cancer, but to be incarcerated and have cancer seems like a death sentence and surely a life test. While his family was always there for him, it’s not like being at home with loved ones to take care of you during this uneasy time.
With mortality being part of the discussion, he thought about his legacy. “What did he have to leave behind to be a marker?” At that moment he started plotting how he could acquire assets, which will continuously help him and his family while moving forward. Upon going through the cancer process and all its entails he came home more focused & determined on being a businessperson. He started plotting how to execute his plan, and with the help of his mother Olga Perez, his father Richie Rosa and his brother Jaime Perez they acquired All Seasons Barbershop. With the success of the business, they were able to have a conversation with Shaun Stover about the purchase of All Stars Hair Studio.
Once the purchase was finalized, he started attending RBI (Reading Barber Institute) where he started meeting more students and gained interest in becoming a professor. He then followed through with the interest and got his professor license with the help of Serge Vilaire. It’s been a total success since then. Today he has the will to live but also the will to prosper.
