This is one of the questions we get asked the most at the salon. The short answer is no. The long answer is it depends on your hair’s integrity, your desired color, and the type of hair dye you plan to use.
Curly hair is sensitive and must be handled with care to avoid damaging it. I would highly discourage anyone from doing their own highlights at home. To lighten the hair, you need a lightener (aka bleach) and a developer. The kind of lightener you use and the volume of developer you use are detrimental to the hair’s integrity. It is very easy to over-process curly hair and fries the curls. Once the curls are over-processed, they will not curl the same and you even risk breakage.
If you are going to color your hair dark, doing it from home is a little more feasible. I would try to not use box dye and instead try something from a beauty supply store that is not as harsh on the curls. Box dyes are infamous for using harsh ingredients that damage the hair.
My last piece of advice is, if you have any inclination, or desire to go blonde, red, or get highlights done please do not use BLACK BOX DYE. Black box dye is the hardest to remove from the hair. Trying to highlight black box dyed hair is not impossible but it does damage the hair and makes it hard for you to get a light color.
