Jennifer Adames, age 39, is a single parent of two, a full-time graphic designer for the R.M. Palmer Company a candy factory. She is also the owner of J. Adames Designs & Photography. As you can see, she is very busy, and we believe her story is worthy of sharing with our readers because she is doing whatever it takes to live her dreams and isn’t letting a family hold her back but using it as the force that drives her.
Sometimes the media focuses on featuring only women in the typical office jobs, sitting behind a desk and typing away. However, there are plenty of women like Jennifer whose graphic design talent has taken her to work in a factory environment and where she must wear different hats. While she is not working on the floor herself as she is the designer, she still is exposed to the plant & must be involved with a different aspects of the business.
She has been working full-time at the R.M. Palmer Company for over 18 years. She tells us that being a woman in a factory-based environment has its ups and downs. As a mother, you have to balance home and work life, appointments, and deadlines. While doing all that, she is also running her own side business in photography. She states it gets challenging at times but it’s all worth it!
As far as her designing job at Palmer, she starts with an idea and designs a concept on the computer to present to the management team who will ultimately determine which ideas/items will move forward. With packaging designs, there are many details you need to keep in mind, like dye lines, nutrition facts, artwork, etc. Once the design is approved, it gets printed as a mockup, approved by the customer, and then off to the printer it goes. Once the boxes, bags, films, and foils are printed, they come to the factory, where they are used to package the chocolate. She says the best part is seeing the end product on the store shelves and knowing that it’s her own work and the work of her co-workers.
I would say another benefit is that she gets to work around chocolate all day. Yes, Palmer makes many of the favorites that you see at the stores such as Cookies & Crème, Caramel Eggs, Caramel Hearts, Milk Chocolate Easter Bunnies, Peanut Butter Cups & Double Crisp Hearts and the list goes on and on. No matter what the occasion may be, make sure to support these local businesses that give back to the community and also support women.
