Since I don’t want to go crazy during the wintertime, I look for things to do during the cold, dark nights, and often play music on stringed instruments. Playing music could also be good for you.
Because it has only three strings, is tuned to a chord, and is inexpensive (a few hundred), dulcimer is the stringed instrument that’s easiest to play and purchase. People can learn to play several songs on dulcimer in one day. You can listen to dulcimer here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=zexdQ4_Guvo .
With more guitarists than people who play all other instruments, guitar is the most popular instrument in the world. It’s not difficult to play. Some guitars are inexpensive (a few hundred), and others are expensive (a few thousand). Gene Cullison, teacher at Meadowood, plays some guitar melodies here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBA1-lhGPA0 .
Violin is more expensive than guitar or dulcimer (several hundred or many thousands of dollars). Plus, playing violin is more difficult because violin has a bow — the bow is another instrument that we must learn. However, the cost and the work of learning violin is worth it because the violin’s voice is beautiful. Meadowood teacher, Margaret Young, plays folk music on violin here: www.facebook.com/BlandonPA/posts/margaret-young-and-judy-terwilliger-are-fiddleviolin-teachers-who-consistently-e/3092250214145431/ .
Playing music is fun and, in the dark nights of winter, it can help you stay sane.
