Loss of independence can be a real and frightening thing for the elderly. We often accept the loss of independence as part of the aging process and feel helpless against it. The need for assistance often comes in small steps and may easily be overlooked until it’s too late. The good news is that early intervention, use of community resources, and open conversations can help preserve independence.
As a provider, one of the first clues I often see is difficulty with medications. Remembering which meds to take at what time can become a daunting task for a person suffering from cognitive decline. However, there are several local pharmacies that will deliver meds to your home, in individual packets, for little or no extra cost. This approach eliminates multiple pill bottles and numerous trips to the pharmacy.
Another major barrier to maintaining independence is the loss of physical ability to cook, clean, and run errands. Many of our community members qualify for a waiver program through the Office on Aging. The program pays for a caregiver (this could even be a designated family member) for a set number of hours each week to aid with these things. BARTA offers free and door-to-door transportation for qualifying applicants. Meals on Wheels delivers hot and cold meals to those in need.
If you or a family member are having trouble maintaining independence, I encourage you to talk with your healthcare provider about accessing these and many other community resources available here in Berks County.
Thanks,
