Did you know that 50 years ago Reading PA was considered one of the fashion capitals of the world? Renown brands like Christian Dior, Oscar de la Renta, Lacoste, Levi’s, Wrangler, Schiaparelli among others, kept operations in Reading for decades. From others, like, Fruit of the Loom, you can track their origins to the city.
The best designs came from New York, but they were manufactured in Reading. Outlet stores were a touristic attraction, and the city became a top destination for thousands of fashion lovers. But China’s imports and the surge of fast fashion had a crucial impact on the region’s socioeconomic activities decline. Eventually, all the brands left, and the outlets closed down. We also have a picture of the examining department at the Berkshire Knitting Mills – no date was given. Berkshire made full fashion hosiery (ladies’ nylon stockings) eventually they made pantyhose right here in Berks County.
Currently, Fast Fashion and the environment are at odds with each other, and we must choose one side or the other. The immediate future of the planet is on the line. Please shop sustainably! Also, the next Berks County Earth Day celebration will be held virtually from April 22nd to 25th, 2021; and physically on June 13th, 2021 from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. The in-person event will be held at City Park in Reading, and the @rdgvntgexpo will have a special collaboration this year! Stay Tuned. And see you next time!
