If you think your loved one is misusing drugs or alcohol, it’s important to look for signs of substance use. Substance use disorders can change the way people look, how they act and how they feel. Symptoms of addiction can be physical, behavioral, and psychological in nature.
Physical signs of addiction include frequent runny nose (common with cocaine use),
tremors or seizures, loss of coordination, extreme exhaustion, chemical odor on breath or clothes, pinpoint pupils, bloodshot eyes, weight change, eating habit changes, irregular sleep, marks on the skin, and poor personal hygiene.
Behavioral signs of addiction include changes in activities, shifts in social circles, legal issues, poor performance at work, decreased participation in family activities, secretive behavior, repeated lying, self-isolation, neglecting responsibilities, and financial issues.
Psychological signs of addiction include changes in personality traits, mental illness like depression or anxiety, paranoia, fear or obsessive thoughts, negative self-image, dismal attitude toward life, withdrawing emotionally from loved ones, lack of motivation, and feelings of apathy or disregard.
To verify addiction, hair testing can be used. Hair can contain remnants of drugs and alcohol that have entered the bloodstream and made their way to the hair shaft. Hair testing can show substances that have been used within the last 90 days. For confidential testing contact ARCpoint Labs of Reading.
Drug and alcohol use disorders are diseases, but they are treatable. Substance use disorder treatment is offered at detox clinics, outpatient facilities, and full-service rehab centers.
