I still remember the stage when my parents got old. In fact, my brothers referred to them as “los viejos” meaning old folks. In the old Spanish language, it is a derogatory word. When something is old it is changed or thrown away.
Now I understand that those classifications do not do justice to the human being. Old age is a natural process and a stage to which it is a privilege to reach. Not everyone has that privilege. However, the way in which this process is planned puts the people who come to it at risk. The general trend is to look at older people as a burden to society. Old age is related to illness and disability. Opportunities are limited. The opinion of the old people is not considered because it is based on the premise that they are influenced by antiquated methods. The wisdom that is gained over the years is not shared.
At my age I assure you that although the body goes through the natural aging process, the spirit grows it does not age. The resilience we develop when facing the blows that life gives us is priceless. Therefore, it is our responsibility to respect and change that concept. We are not old or useless. Reaching old age is gain for me. For all that we have overcome we are not old, we are classics or models worthy of imitation.
