Ever wondered what happens to your hair as you age? Here are some changes you can look out for and some things you can do to combat these changes.
#1 – Hair will lose pigment and become grey.
This is one is the most noticeable change and the hardest change to combat proactively. When the hair loses melanin and protein the hair texture changes, and the hair becomes colorless and resistant to products. Often times this change is genetic and therefore cannot be prevented. Other causes of grey hair are medication, stress, poor diet, or illness. To combat grey hair the hair can be colored. Deep conditioning and protein treatments help keep the hair soft and allow product to penetrate the hair.
#2 – Hair will become dry and break easily.
You will notice that as you age your hair becomes dry and more prone to breakage. This is also due to the hair losing protein which is the building block for hair. A healthy diet, drinking a lot of water, along with deep conditioning treatments and protein treatments will help make hair stronger and look and feel better.
#3 – Hair will become thin and grow slowly.
You will also notice that your hair will start thinning and not grow as fast. This is due to the hair staying in the resting phase (Telogen) longer than normal. You might even notice that your scalp becomes visible. This is one of the hardest parts of aging hair. The best way to combat this change is by taking hair vitamins. Drinking water, eating healthy and sleeping at least 8 hours a night will also help this combat this change.
Changes in our hair are inevitable but the good thing is that there are steps that we can take to be proactive. By eating healthy, drinking water, sleeping, deep condition and using protein treatments we can help our hair age beautifully and in the healthiest way possible.
