One of the best parts of Summer is being in the sun and swimming in the pool. The freedom that natural hair gives us is so great because there are almost no restrictions when it comes to swimming. It’s great to not have concerns of jumping in the water and messing up a blowout.
The downside to swimming in the pool is the chlorine in the water. Chlorine can be very harsh on the curls and overtime dry them and make them frizzy. But there are some simple steps we can take to protect our curls before, during and after swimming.
The following tips will ensure you have a good time when you go swimming while not compromising the integrity of your curls.
- Before swimming – Use a leave-in conditioner to moisturize the hair and fill in the porous strands to minimize the amount of chlorine that gets into the hair.
- While Swimming – keep your hair in a ponytail or braid to prevent it from getting tangled. If you are comfortable wear a swimming cap for extra protection.
- After Swimming – Wash your hair with a sulfate free shampoo and deep condition your hair. Deep conditioning your hair will bring back the moisture you lost.
Enjoy the Summer and keep your curls healthy!
