Young US Latinas attempt suicide more often than other youth
{For at least two decades, epidemiological research has confirmed the high rate of suicidal behaviors by pre-adolescent and adolescent females of Hispanic origin (i.e., foreign-born) or heritage (i.e., U.S.-born; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2008;}
“Bullies do not want to fight; they want to win. A bully’s power is in the need to target and the ability to overpower a perceived weaker youth” according to Pam Gockley
The Camel Project curriculum is cognitive, engagement (SEL), solution-focused, and goal-oriented. In the Stop Bullying – I Care program seeks to eliminate the aggressive learned behavior of bullying by replacing it with coping skills and other learned behaviors, including kindness, compassion, and empathy.
Effects and scale of bullying:
- Three out of four or 75% of students have seen or been the target of bullying by 9th grade. ~CDC
- Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death of youth between 10 and 24 yrs of age. ~CDC
- Of school shooters, 100% spoke about the planned violence, and 80% were long-term bullied. ~ Secret Service
One technique uses a “reverse mentoring” model to evaluate current programs in schools and community youth programs. A diverse group of youth assesses the effectiveness of existing programs. A core competency is to measure the effects of current policy, actions, and reactions and the impact on youth within the community. The youth-driven assessments result in respectful communications, responsibility, and more effective impactful programs in our schools and community youth programs.
There’s no question that millennial have much to teach.
You can help today and impact our youth and community:
- Be the role-model and consistently show kindness, compassion, and empathy, on purpose.
- Be present and pay attention to the attitude and behaviors.
- Step in, stop, and address all aggressive unwanted behaviors by beginning with yourself.
