Enjoying the affection and attention of the grandparents enriches the lives of human beings. Those who have the joy of enjoying or having enjoyed that special love has a treasure. Grandparents are an additional complement in the lives of children. Their tenderness, teachings and shared stories remain in our lives forever.
Between parents and grandparents, there should be no competition for the love of the children. Each has a definite and fundamental role in raising them. Discipline must be established by parents. Grandparents must follow the established and not infer in the upbringing. Otherwise, the parents are being removed authority. They should not see in their grandchildren an extension of their children or consider them as if they were theirs.
The function of the grandparents is to pass on the history of the family to their grandchildren. Share experiences and values with them. Give them love and support without interfering in their upbringing. Grandchildren are the children of our children are not ours. No matter how much love we feel for them, it is the parent’s responsibility to raise them. If we place the functions in their right perspective, we can enjoy the experience of seeing the continuity of our legacy in the lives of our grandchildren.
