This New Year marks officially the 1 million Latinos in Pennsylvania – a great opportunity to add power to our numbers. 2020 is a transformative year for the community in the areas of leadership, civic engagement and activism.
We are urging everyone to respond to the census questionnaire and all Latinos, documented or undocumented, to be counted. There is power in numbers.
The City of Reading will host the 2020 Pennsylvania Latino Convention (October 28-30) bringing together industry experts, entrepreneurs, executives, and leaders to forge a strategic, intentional and inclusive agenda demanding equity for Latinos in all areas of the public and private sector. The convention is the most comprehensive event covering all aspects of Latino life in Pennsylvania.
Twenty-twenty is a year of presidential elections and Latinos will be in the middle of it all – we are the deciding voters of who wins or loses the highest office of the land.
Twenty-twenty is the year with the largest number of Latinos ever-elected to municipal governments across the state. This year, Latino voices will emerge and be included in drafting public policy and leading the way for a stronger, more transparent and inclusive democracy.
The answer to the title of this article – this New Year brings a lot of new opportunities and responsibilities for our community. We are ready to lead, to serve, to grow. We are 1 million strong!
