In the US, over 21 million kids play team sports annually, many starting as young as age six. Participating in youth sports positively affects youth development. Young people learn the value of teamwork and discipline while building physical and social skills, increasing mental awareness, and improving self-perception.
Establishing a balance of strength, flexibility, biomechanics, and training is key to success and injury prevention in all sports. A physical therapist can play a very important role in keeping kids in the game and having fun. Following an initial physical evaluation to identify imbalances in the athlete, a physical therapist works with the athlete and parent to develop a treatment plan that addresses strength, flexibility and biomechanics. The PT also makes recommendations on training (type, frequency and intensity), and educates on proper warm-up and cool-down.
In the unfortunate instance where an athlete is injured, immediate medical care from a physical therapist can be extremely valuable to understand the full severity. Physical therapists are great diagnosticians; with specific tests, they can diagnose an injury with accuracy that rivals MRIs. They begin with a thorough physical examination and medical history; then identify treatment goals with prescribed exercises, and provide a timeline for the safe return to sport.
Physical therapy treatment often includes hands-on/manual therapy, pain reduction and management techniques, along with a prescribed exercise program. Combined with proper training or rehabilitation, physical therapy plays an important role in keeping youth athletes pain- and injury-free!
