I’m frequently looking for situations where technology can enhance our lives and it makes me thrilled when I find initiatives that help change the bad perspective about video gaming. And I think this is one of those cases.
Almost daily we see the news on how video games negatively impact our society and especially our children. We see many articles with titles like “Does Your Child Have Fortnite Fever?” “Be careful about Cybernetic predators at Fortnite” or is your kid being bullied at Fortnite”. Besides that, last year, the World Health Organization officially qualified “Gaming Disorder” as a mental health condition.
Being a parent is not an easy task, even more challenging if you have a child with autism. But not all is lost. There is a very cool initiative based on Minecraft called Autcraft. Autcraft is a video game that was created by Stuart Duncan who not only has autism himself but also a child with autism as well. This is a community that includes autistics, parents of autistic children and family members, all working to maintain a safe environment for all members that access its servers. Their key ideas among others are that bullying, killing, stealing, griefing, (Player who deliberately irritates and harasses other players), and swearing is not tolerated.
Events like” The Annual New Year Eve Fireworks” makes this initiative even richer. Autcraft does this because some children with autism can’t see fireworks in real life.
I invite you to see technology as a tool that can be used positively or negatively, the way we use it is in our hands.
Until next time…
