As a minority and a female, I’m so honored to feature Tonya A. Butler in my magazine. I lived in Berks County my whole life and there were very few African American or Latino role models for us to look up to. Now with my own children being raised in this area, I’m happy they have role models of their own color. This might be all they need to give them an extra push or the mentality of: “I too can accomplish this”.
Tonya A. Butler is a Magisterial District Judge and veteran attorney who has dedicated her legal talents to public service and working creatively to improving the quality of life in our community.
Tonya has twenty-one years of legal experience. She began her legal career as an Assistant Public Defender where she represented defendants charged with various criminal offenses. Subsequently, she opened the Law Office of Tonya A. Butler and offered affordable legal services to the community. For ten years Tonya served as a City of Reading Assistant City Solicitor, representing the interests of both the City of Reading and its residents. She then served briefly as Acting Human Resources Manager for the City of Reading. In November 2017, Tonya was elected Magisterial District Judge for Northeast Reading. As a MDJ she uses her legal background and experience to serve the community with compassion and ensure a fair and transparent legal system.
Tonya is a graduate of Albright College and Widener University School of Law. Her passion is with our youth. Tonya speaks to the youth regarding social and legal issues and is known to have a student shadowing her in court. Tonya serves on a number of Boards and Committees throughout the community.
Tonya lives in Reading and is married to Wynton Butler. They have two sons Wynton, II, and Wesley both of whom she is proud to say have matriculated through the Reading School District.
