Curly Confession: Do you Know your Curl Type?
Identifying your curl type is extremely important as it will help you better understand your hair. Additionally, you will be better able to identify the products and techniques most appropriate for your hair. In turn your hair will look and feel its best.
The hair-typing chart, also known as the Andre Walker Hair Classification System, was created by Oprah Winfrey’s hair stylist Andre Walker.
This classification system breaks down the hair types into four categories:
- Straight
- Wavy
- Curly
- Kinky
Within those four categories there are 3 subcategories, which determine how lose or tight your hair texture is:
- A – Describes a loose texture
- B – Describes a medium texture
- C – This is the tightest of the textures
To give you an example of this, I have curly hair and therefore I fall within the 3 category and I have tight curls, so I fall within the C category. My curly type is 3C.
I like to use oils to pre-poo prior to washing my hair, I deep condition my hair, the I style with curl milks or a light leave-in conditioner and then I seal in the moisture with alcohol free gel. This allows my curls to look defined, have volume, look shiny and feel soft.
I hope this helps you identify your hair type as hair education will take your curls to the next level! Other things to consider when it comes to your hair are your hair’s porosity and your hair’s density. If you wish to learn more check out next month’s article where I will discuss these topics.
