What is self-love? Self -love is loving and accepting our selves. Although it sounds simple, self-love is one of the hardest things to achieve. It took me being in my twenty’s to really get to know myself and love me for who I am.
Freeing my hair was one of the things that helped me grow and develop as an individual. The one thing that I considered to be my biggest weakest has helped me gain a lot of strength and confidence. I know I’m not the only one.
Achieving self-love is not always about hair, but for many of us, our hair is a big insecurity that we wish we could change. We’re surrounded by messages both subliminal and in our faces that suggest that our hair is nappy, untamed, unnatural and overall unacceptable. These are the kinds of messages that over time can have a big influence on our self-steam and on our lives.
So how did I turn my weakness into a strength that eventually led me to love and accept myself? I educated myself, I accepted my hair texture, I got rid of the damaged hair, I learned to care for and nourish my hair and before I knew it, it flourished. It’s not that simple, it took time and a lot of soul searching in the process but it’s possible.
I know that self-love goes deeper than just hair; through this journey, I learned that the key is addressing the issues one at a time to achieve our overall well being and self-love will come slowly.
