Whether they are called Grandma & Grandpop, Grandmum & Puppa, Nana & Papa, Nonna or Nonno or Abuela or Abuelo, kids love their grandparents. Grandparents always have great stories to tell! Do you remember as a little kid when your parents said you were going to grandpa or grandma’s house? It was the best!
What if I told you that it’s beneficial to both your children and the grandparents to stay in contact? It’s been studied that the more kids know about their family history, the stronger their self-esteem will be. It’s equally beneficial for the grandparents as they have to deal with lots of things that may include occasional problems with remembering certain things and depression. I feel it will strengthen a relationship with them now and is a way to connect with them.
Next time you take your kids to their grandparent’s house you should have the kids play a game with them. Play a question game; that will bring long-lasting memories for all. Let’s not forget our Elders!
Question game:
- What things did you do as a kid that kids of the newer generation don’t do anymore?
- What was your first job? What did you like about it? What did you hate about it?
- Did you go to college? Do you have any stories about college friends or trips?
- As a child, what were your career aspirations? Did those change as you got older? Why?
- How did you and your spouse meet and how did you know they were the ones?
- As an adult, did you have any close friends who you’ve kept in touch with?
- What are you most proud moments in your life?
- Where did you grow up, your hometown? How many different places did you live?
- Where would you have liked to have visited but never got there?
- What was the kindest thing you’ve done for someone else?
