Did you know that moles can be cancerous? Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer and usually manifests in the form of a mole. Skin cancer occurs in any part of the skin, including your face. Does this mean you should be worried if you spot a mole on your face? No! Not necessarily. Facial moles are very common and usually harmless. The problem is that moles are sometimes hard to distinguish from skin cancer especially when they are in the early stages. Normally benign moles are an even shade of tan, dark brown or black, usually round and evenly shaped, and flat or raised.
Potentially cancerous moles vary depending on the type of skin cancer. For example, basal cell skin cancer, which is the most common, can appear as an innocent, small, flat, pink discoloration on the skin. As they grow, they can become raised and pearly looking. Other forms of skin cancer are melanoma, which is highly spreadable and looks like asymmetrical age spots, and squamous cell skin cancer, which is usually acquired by people who’ve spent many years in the sun and whose skin usually feel sore when pressed on.
Always be aware of new or existing changing moles. If you develop a concern for any, make an appointment and get them checked as soon as possible.
