Tucked quietly away in West Reading is a hidden gem that is dedicated to providing peer support to anyone whose life is affected by breast cancer. For over two decades, Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks has been there for women and their loved ones as they embark on the journey no one ever set out to take. What distinguishes BCSS is their dedication to celebrate life and to empower not only the survivor but the community as well.
In the past five years, BCSS has expanded their commitment to the community by hosting El Poder del Rosado, an annual Latina conference to celebrate life and to join others in their community in a festive environment that is provided in a bilingual format.
This year BCSS partnered with Barrio Alegria and created the Cancer Dance Warrior Project. Attendees were treated to an interpretive dance performance choreographed by two high school students. The various stages of grief and ultimate acceptance were captured by riveting performances by Antolina Nova and Sharon Ciccone.
The goal of BCSS is to continue with the Cancer Dance Warrior Project and make it available to breast cancer survivors as a way to celebrate their lives regardless of where they are in their journey—so that they can inspire others to express their myriad of emotions and feelings through movement and dance.
